to love & be loved – glittering gold engagement party

On New Year’s Eve 2015 I co-hosted, along with seven other fabulous women, an engagement party for one of our favorite couples. The happy couple got engaged in early Fall and happens to be comprised of my lovely co-author Krista and her boy, Chase.

We all consider Krista to be one of the loveliest women that we know. She is kind, loyal, a realist and always by our sides. She is the one we can always count on and always the one to celebrate us in her perfect way. So we knew that we needed to go all out, for not only her but Chase too because he is equally special to us and makes Krista oh so happy, which is really what matters….

So here is a look below at our NYE party to celebrate the future Mr and Mrs Millemann!

decor

You know the saying “less is more.” Well in this case we went for “more is more.” More balloons, more glitter, more gold, more flowers, more votives, more candles, more tulle, more golden ducks, more, more, more. It was New Year’s Eve after all and we were celebrating our of our all time favorite couples…

Since this party wasn’t only about Krista with all the gold and glitter, (Chase, you matter too!) I took on the task of making as many gold origami ducks as possible to decorate the room since they are both avid Ducks. Go ducks!

We were fortunate enough to rent out the “back room” at ZINC for the evening (side note: if you are looking for a phenomenal party spot to rent out in Ketchum, this is your room!). We decked out the perfectly neutral room in the following:

  • 150+ handmade gold origami ducks
  • gold origami duck entry
  • gold and white balloons with hanging “goldilocks”
  • gold votives
  • white flowers (hydrangeas and calla lilies)
  • gold glitter tulle
  • NYE party hats
  • homemade shot skis (more details below!)

custom shot skis

custom family shot skis

Krista’s brother, Drew, and I made these custom shot skis for the happy couple to keep FOREVER! We gathered a retro ski that belonged to both of their fathers and went to work. Drew used a drill press to make custom holes in both of the skis that fit glass shot glasses. I then painted each one with a black rectangle and wrote the family name and their parent’s wedding anniversary. I shed a few tears and essentially Drew did all of the work while I simply played with the puppies…

Cheers to the prettiest shot skis of all time!

menu

Since it was NYE and celebrating Chase and Krista, we knew we needed a plethora of delicious food. We decided to go with some healthy, comfort food catering from the Haven as well as order quite a few flat breads from ZINC. We additionally supplemented with a few cheese plates and desserts (since you can’t go wrong with more of either of those!) Our spread included:

  • pigs in a blanket
  • sautéed brussel sprouts
  • chicken skewers
  • antipasto platter
  • crostini platter
  • assorted flatbreads
  • cheese plates
  • homemade popcorn
  • gluten free cookies
  • local beer, red wine, white wine and of course champagne!

the company

You know a couple is truly loved when you receive a quarter more RSVPs for an event than expected. Friends and family came from near and very far (shout out to Mendoza coming from LA and Chris and Katja from Bend!) to celebrate and smother Chase and Krista with love. The company at this party was truly an outstanding group of brilliant, fun loving and good hearted people. The type of people you want to party with every night.

Cheers to Chase and Krista!

weekend love it — winter treats to cure a cold

Since Thanksgiving I have been battling quite possibly the worst cold I have ever had. I blame my brother who caught the bug right before I did. The past few weeks have been a roller coaster of getting slightly better to only get worse, which I didn’t think was possible. I literally tried everything to get better to no avail.

I finally caved in and went to see the doctor after two weeks and after a few days on antibiotics things are looking up. My only solace that I am not simply getting extremely weak in my old age is that I know several other people battling the same cold. Needless to say I haven’t been feeling super attractive (I could guide Santa’s sleigh my nose is so bright red….), so the last week I tried to focus on the little things that I knew would at least raise my spirits!

1. Jumpsuits. The first time that I wore a beloved jumpsuit was for our first annual Friendsgiving 2013 where the boy slightly questioned what I was wearing. Regardless, I have been in love with jumpsuits ever since.

They are literally the perfect outfit (except when you have to pee). There is no battling with tights when trying to wear a dress in the winter and you can simply slip on one piece and you are good to go! I obviously included a jumpsuit (or two) in my holiday shopping. Here are a few of my recent purchases!

2. Gift Tags. While visiting Krista on her first day on the job at Huck & Paddle, I found these gift tags that I just couldn’t resist. I originally bought them as name tags for Friendsgivemas but have since used them for presents!

I believe they are made out of tin (maybe?) and you can write on them with chalk or a chalk marker. I love that they are reusable and that they add a little rustic touch!

3. Holiday Lights Around Town. One of my favorite things about the holidays is the lights. I love the sparkle, the shine and the wonderful colors and patterns that pop up everywhere. They simply make me happy.

On Saturday night the boy and I ordered take out and then he nicely participated in one of my favorite winter activities of driving around and looking at holiday lights! We made a quick loop with these lights on the route. There are a ton of more spectacular lights but you can’t beat this view!

4. Quality time with Maude Pod. This last week little Miss Maude Pod got spayed, which was a semi-traumatic event. I cried (just a tiny bit!) after picking her up because she was just not herself. The poor pup had a really rough first day and night but has since bounced back to her crazy, snuggly self.

5. Early Christmas Presents. Maude Pod had the first present under the tree and to be honest the only present for quite some time. I have no shame. Since pugger Lizzy only wants cookies for Christmas, she is easy to please.

With Maude Pod’s full recovery from her surgery she has been a maniac. She isn’t allowed to be too active or get into any water, which limits any hunting adventure, so we have had far too much indoor play time. She received an early Christmas present since she desperately needed a new toy to play with and distract her!

6. Pomegranate Seeds & Cute Bowls. Earlier this week the boy suggested a pomegranate might taste good to my never ending cold. We happened to have a few decorating our table from Friendsgivemas and it ended up being the perfect treat! Cold fighting tip: pomegranates contain a ton of antioxidants and approximately 50% of your daily recommended vitamin C. Win, win.

Each night last week the boy dutifully deseeded a pomegranate for me to enjoy (he’s a keeper). I ate the seeds like you would eat cereal out of cute little bowls that I recently bought at our local market, Atkinsons’ Market. They were delicious and about the only thing that tasted good to me. Although they are a delicious winter treat, pomegranates are ridiculously expensive here, so I may have to limit this new daily obsession…

7. Mat Kearney – “Coming Home.” To be honest, I’m probably one of the worst Oregon Football Fans. I try to keep up on what is going on (thank god for social media) but football just really isn’t my thing. But even I know that winning the Heisman is a super big deal, which Oregon Duck Marcus Mariota just won!

With this honor, “Coming Home” by Mat Kearney (who was born in Eugene!) kept popping up on my Facebook fed. I’ve heard the song several times now, but I still makes me reminiscent of my college days and leaves me happy every time I hear it!

weekend love it — first snows and replacement passports

The past two weeks have been weeks of extremes, but great all the same. Here’s a look!

1. A fresh blanket of snow: On Sunday, we woke up to the first fresh blanket of snow on the ground. It of course took about two hours in the morning sun to melt, but there’s still some lingering in the mountains surrounding the valley. I can’t believe ski season is less than a month away, and while I always think winter lasts a bit too long around here, I was still as excited as ever to wake up to snow for the first time in a long time. Here’s hoping for some serious powder this ski season! Snow gods, be good to us! Here are a few pretty photos from some talented local photographers, and one of our backyard 🙂

2. Magic does exist:  Anyone who knows me at all knows that I am still waiting for an owl to deliver my acceptance letter to Hogwarts. Life would just be so much cooler with wands, butter beer, and hippogriffs. I’m sure you’ve seen this, but you need to actually watch it — more proof that Harry Potter is a total genius and all-around awesome human being/wizard. Chase likes to remind me that he’s not actually Harry Potter…I plug my ears.

3. The suite life and my duckies: Chase’s sister’s, fiancés, mother’s friend (have I lost you yet) had some extra tickets to the Ducks vs. Cal game at the new Levi’s stadium. It was heaven…Chase remarked “this is how man was meant to watch football.” I remarked, “This is how woman is meant to watch football.” I was literally skipping with delight when the elevator brought us to the top floor of the stadium. It was a like a five-star hotel…with bottomless top-shelf booze and delicious, gourmet food. As I will likely never experience this kind of VIP treatment again, I took full advantage. Even better, the Ducks came out with a W, and kept the momentum this weekend vs. Stanford. Thanks to everyone who made this suite experience happen!

4. Figuratively exploding with love and excitement:  Power couple alert! A quick shout out to my beloved, lovely, and golden-hearted cousin, Erica, who is officially off the market as of Sunday! She is such a beautiful person and someone who just makes life make sense to me. I’m so excited for her and her fiancé, Carter. Can’t wait to watch you two share a life of love and happiness! xoxo

yay!

yay!

5. Rushmypassport.com: Nothing quite compares to the sheer panic of realizing that you haven’t seen you passport in a couple months….two weeks before you’re meant to leave for Mexico…and not finding it after scouring your house, office, and car at about 11 p.m. With a strong cocktail in hand, Chase came to the rescue with the discovery of rushmypassport.com, a courier service that can get a new passport to you within about 48 hours if needed. While is costs a pretty penny, my Mexico vacation was certainly worth it. The service was easy, straightforward, and very user-friendly, and even though the checklist seems daunting, I was able to pull all of the materials together within a couple hours and send it off. I was skeptical about the process as in my mind the government should only be handling these kinds of things…But, the reality is that they don’t guarantee a passport within 14 days of your request, especially if you live in Idaho. Behold, new passport! Mexico, here I come!

7. This isn’t Nam — there are rules here: I’m not really one for costumes, but the boy and I pulled it together at the very last minute and went out on Halloween night as “the dude” and Walter from Big Lebowski. As I am a girl with long blonde hair that doesn’t weigh 250 lbs. I had to get creative and stay committed — cue the bowling ball that I carried with me the entire night. It ended up being a great night full of hilarious Big Lebowski quotes. Happy Halloween!

8. Vote, vote, vote: As a young woman living in Idaho, politics can be…a little frustrating, to say the least. Handing in my ballot today was such a satisfying feeling, no matter the results. Then again, Blaine County is literally a tiny speck of blue in a vast, vast expanse of red…That fact is a bit scary from the lens of women’s rights, and I will keep voting every chance I get.

Idaho's election results...woooo, Blaine County!

I will be in Mexico for the next week, so you probably won’t hear much from me :). Have a great week! xoxo
