weekend love it – rhubarb, doggie swims, extreme crossfit & hats

This past weekend was one of the last weekends of the entire summer where I didn’t have any major plans. So I enjoyed a few spontaneous trips to a nearby pond with the dogs, a beer or two at the 1st Annual Ketchum Brew Fest, birthday festivities and a few great workouts. Here are a few of my highlights for the week/weekend!

1. Rhubarb. We have a giant rhubarb plant growing conspicuously in the far back corner of my parent’s yard. This plant has been there for as long as I can remember and literally requires no maintenance.  Every year the stalks keep coming back in their brilliant red hues.

I have been wanting to pluck a few stalks for weeks now for baking. Krista provided me with some brilliant inspiration from the always clever Martha Stewart and her Rhubarb Recipes. I have been itching to make the upside down cake, so I finally  got around to a harvest (Rhubarb Upside Down Cake Recipe coming soon!).

2. Doggie Swims. We have been slowly introducing Miss Maude to water as she is destined to be a water dog. So far she loves it and gets fired up with each bound through the water.  We took just the “big dogs” (as pugs are more sinkers than swimmers) swimming both days this weekend to a local pond. Sticks were thrown and retrieved, and fun was had by all.

3. Extreme Crossfit. I am a Crossfit devout. But before you gag, close your browser and forever stop reading, just think that there must be a reason for the craze. By no means will I ever be an extreme Crossfiter or crazy competitor, but I still love the daily workouts. I will admit that I Drank the Crossfit Kool-Aid but I will never go back. I love the spirit of Crossfit. It is an amazing team workout, and the people and the culture of bettering yourself, regardless to what extent, inspires me daily.

Every time I walk into Sun Valley Crossfit I know that I will feel better than when I walk out. This was exactly the case at 9:00 am on Saturday morning when I took on “Fran”. I could have definitely used more sleep and far more coffee for a Saturday but after completing this workout I felt incredibly accomplished.

So for any haters or doubters out there, don’t knock it ’til you try it! Here are a few pictures of my “Fran” experience.

4. Panama Hats. I’ve had a serious obsession recently with Panama Hats. Although they seem to be everywhere and a definite summer style, I am still in love. Here are just a few that I have had my eye on:

  1. Your puppy pictures made my day — especially the stick-sharing one. Adorable!

I was a CrossFit person for a while and have been debating going back, but just seems so scary. Some friends turned the engine bay at the Greenhorn Gulch Fire Station into our “box,” so there was no intimidation whatsoever…but that faded off, and I worry about going to a gym where I am clearly going to be the least fit person in the room. What’s the atmosphere like at SV Crossfit?
